About to start a Leg kick Hands and head are prepared to take full benifit of a kick,(arms in line with head, head looking down) Full recovery of legs completed i.e. feet near thigh,Legs ready to kick, ankle outside to knee,
And now kick will give good forward propulsion |

Amanda Beard is a great swimmer and basically I agree with Pravin's comments. But couldn't she be better and faster???...and 2 specific points:
2. She takes such a powerful inward sweep that she ends up out of the water to steep...far more than 45 degrees angle. Isn't that slowing her down??? Sandeno's breastsroke is also a powerful one but she mantains almost a 45 degree angle when breathing... |

yeah, its not like she can get her knees much higher, you can see her heels almost at the surface. one thing i like about her breaststroke is her timing, the recovery is just so fast and sets up her kick perfectly. another thing i like about this picture is how her head is perfectly between her arms and looking down.

Glenn...you know I am not a breaststroker but tell me something...is their a "foot catch" in this stroke??????? |
Yep, and you're seeing it great there. The higher you catch the water in your kick, the more time you spend sending yourself forward. This is where ankle flexibility really comes in handy. |
This is an awesome picture---it reminded me of two things that my coach tells me to do----to make sure my toes are pointing out towards the sides of the pool, and to keep my eyes down! Thanks |

About the comment on drag by Pravin, I think she is not creating drag because she is starting to quick and the recovery of leg is finished, is that correct?
Javier...although I am not a breaststroker, no it is not correct...she is creating drag with her knees so low. When she starts her kick she has to be streamlined to receive all the power of her kick as you can see in the picture, and yes the movement is forward not down...Amand moves forward. Finally she recovers her legs "hiding" her feet until the last moment.

Glenn, do you have a comparable shot to the above of Staciana Stitts? I love this shot and in fact watched this DVD with a friend on Xmas eve afternoon, but my Stitts/Denniston DVD seems to be always out on loan ... Is Amanda always faster than Staciana? Because I think I like Staciana's style the best but I don't know why. |
When recovering the legs I try to do it with the joined legs hiding the feet until the moment I turn the feet out and then I open the legs to start the kick. The deep of knees depend on how much you open the legs in the kick and during recovery as well. But if you were with the body horizontal, the drag created by legs and feet happen during recovery, not during the kick.

I think that the best part of this picture is how tight her arms are. David Marsh says to imagine that you are swimming into a safety cone, and this picture shows Amanda doing that perfectly. |
Her hands and arms look to be angled downward slightly towards the bottom of the pool as opposed to parallel to the surface of the water. If this is true why is she doing this? I have seen other great breaststrokers I think angle down a little as they kick themselves forward. Is this part of the wave style? |
Shouldn't eyes be forward, water coming up to eyes, and short fast blasts with the arms? My daughter is an excellent breaststroker and this works for her. Should I be teaching her this way? By the way, she is short and little. |
Devi...eyes should be looking down. I am not a breaststroker but be careful with this: if your daughter is young she might get by with some real mistakes (specially in breaststroke)BUT as soon as she starts to grow she will find her times dropping...all do to poor technique.
