Swimming Question of the Week - June 10, 2008

Posted by Barbara Hummel on Jun 10, 2008 09:00AM (2,903 views)

We loved hearing about everyone's Mom on Mother's Day, so this month the Dads get equal time.

Tell us about your Dad and swimming.  Does he (or did he) swim?  Did he teach you to swim or maybe coach you?  Did you teach HIM how to swim?  Did he go to your practices and meets?   How did he complement the role of your Mom when it came to swimming?   Does he compete as a Masters swimmer?   Heres your chance to honor your Dad!

This will be my first Father's Day without him. Sniff. He taught me to swim breaststroke almost 50 years ago. Now I am a Masters swimmer and can still hear him shouting "In, out, together, IN, OUT, TOGETHER" in an increasingly frustrated tone until eventually I managed it. Thanks Dad.

My dad was a great swimmer, as long as he could do it without upsetting his beer and cigar (remember this was the late 50's and this was socially acceptable).

Nothing like watching my dad in our kiddy pool sitting and relaxing with a cold beverage. We kids learned about life when he was relaxed like this and started teling stories of his youth. It's been 20 years since my Dad passed and I still miss him.

My mom was really the one that got me into swimming, but I do remember having my dad catch me when I jumped from the border of the pool into his arms. We also had a lot of fun play games we made up (he always let me win). If it wasn't for him and my mom I would have missed something that is now a great part of my life.

Oh...well since I can remember, Dad took us (me and my 2 brothers) all around this country in his fishing trips which he simply loved down to his bones. So very early in my life (3 years or so) I learned to dive, first it was snorkeling but by the time I was 7 I already knew all the tricks and tips about SCUBA diving. Dad loved the ocean and every water sport as well (skiing, diving, fishing, surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing and so on) so swimming was a must skill I needed to learn...and I did so.
May God bless him for everything!!!!
