Have you ever had a piece of swim equipment malfunction in a race? What happened and how did you handle it?

I've told this story at just about every camp I've ever taught at... so an abridged version for the site. Prelims of World Championships in Ecuador, 1982. John Moffet and I march to the blocks, the kids are taking all our clothes to the room we had to go to after the race, and John turns to me and says... "Glenn, you have a hole in your suit!". Long story short, the seam had split right down the middle of the suit... and this was back in the day when the seam WAS about all there was to the suit. Kinda tough to describe how I handled it, but suffice it to say, there were 3 women timers who won't soon forget that start. They may be scarred for life. :) |

Me personnally I have only had goggles fall off my face during a race. However, a few years back while coaching, I had a swimmer who lost his suit while swimming back stroke on the first turn. To his credit he finished the race |

Goggles flipped up and started to leak water because I must have not adjusted them with my cap. It was only leaking in one eye so I tried to close that eye (my right one) breathe only to the left but breathe now every six (this was a 1000 and I usually try to breathe every five) and focus on the kick. Surprisingly it was a best time by three seconds. |

Every Summer, we have a two-day short course intrasquad meet right before long course champs to give people one last chance to qualify for zones in yards. You can swim the same event both nights if you have to. Last year, I was 4.06 seconds off my zone cut in the 100 back. My coaches thought it was a stretch, my I tried anyway. The first night, off the start, my goggles completely fell off and sank to the bottom at the start. I just kept going and dropped two seconds. (So don't even try to use the excuse that you went slow because you lost your goggles.) The next night i dropped exactly 2 more seconds, unfortunately missing my zone cut by 6 one hundredths of a second. Moral:don't slow down because you lost your goggles; just go faster! |

Can you say Mama? Did I remember correctly? I was probably in a daze anyway. :) |

When I was an age group swimmer, one time when swimming long course 400 IM, I dove in at the start and, NOT having a whole lot of chest to keep the suit in place, it slipped across one breast and I didn't want to fix it during the fly because I would get DQd and so I pushed off doing backstroke and an official watching the turns looked down and then covered his eyes and glanced away. At that point, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. |

Since the guys were the ones that rushed to the block with a towel I would say that you could have been in a daze. Tally. |
We are a group of swimmers who swim really fast, and like to help others learn how to reach their competitive potential in the area of professional swimming.
