With the new rules coming, and the uncertainty of what will be legal, or illegal, will you purchasing a new "tech suit" this year?

nah, the suits cost a furtune anyway.

I will wait untill year end, let them ensure everything is clear and finalised. They must work though, I won 7 out of 8 events against my main rival, untill he started wearing a Blue Seventy swim suit, I have not yet beaten him in the last 4 races!!! Even then they still are pricy, I would like to see them ban all suits. Let it be all about the swimmer. These expensive suits put pressure on parents of school/level3 swimmers to ensure there kid has the best. And they apparently have a limited mileage/lifespan?

W.I.N- When in Now!
I'm not concerned at all will the future legislation, but only the present moments.
Regardless of rules,I would like to see our sport CLEAN from distractions and external devices.I'm frustrated with lazy swimmers going fast just because of a suit.

Responded Mar 25, 2009 05:16PM

So, no suits at all Delifus? No goggles either? ;)

Also, the "lazy" swimmer thing going fast... sorry, that just doesn't fly. Faster is one thing, but when you say "fast", I think that's a relative term, and if someone lazy beat you or one of your swimmers because of the suit, then I would say there may be other issues involved. The suit would, in my opinion, just be a convenient excuse. Don't get mad, just stating an opinion.

Hey...I'm trying to completely level out the playing field here.(Adam and Eve style)
Eve didn't get in trouble because of the tree, but maybe she tried on a performance suit.
(convenient excuse!) lol
Just kidding...that comment was out of frustration from one of my swimmers, not coming to practice and thinking that he could just "put on the magic suit" and go fast.So I guess its just a little frustration coming out from that situation.By the way...the kid dropped 6 seconds in his 200IM.So maybe its an ego thing as well! :)

I understand, but in that situation, maybe we need to change how we train someone. Just playing... but if we do have swimmers that don't fit the standard model of training, could we adjust our training with the understanding that the suits, or the compression of any full, or upper body suit (fast skin as well), will sorta smooth off all the flabby edges and make the swimmer faster? If that's the case, I'm thinking we could really get more creative from a technique standpoint with many swimmers who are on the fence with the sport because it's SO hard to train for.

Just saying, not everyone wants to, or has the ability to swim in the Olympics... but just about everyone can get faster. While some only look at these suits from the "cheating" perspective, I'm trying to look at it from the "how to keep kids in the sport, and happy" perspective.

Yes, no suits at all.

Responded Mar 25, 2009 10:54PM

well Iam just a simple swimmer not a racer so no swim suit for me

Responded Mar 26, 2009 06:46AM

I don't want them to ban high tech suits, it would be incredibly stupid. I am not worried that this will happen though; they will just clearify the rules. I love my full leg suits and I am always sad when boss (my coach) says "no suit at this race, it is just a test competion". They're hot :) I cannot afford to buy always the newest suits. When I am all grown up (haha) and have the money, perheps I will hehe. Technology is awesome!!!!

Responded Mar 26, 2009 03:49PM

I'd like to see how my swims/times change with the new suits to better compare with others, but I do not have the money to risk having a useless suit next year... Although I could throw it on for unsanctioned time trials :), but wheres the fun in that.

Responded Mar 27, 2009 06:44PM

I've just been given a brand new LZR legskin as a get well present from my club(s), so I won't be buying a new suite:) Mind you had to be really quite ill to get it.

Responded Mar 27, 2009 07:28PM

Then you're going to find out soon enough that just putting on the suit won't make you fast... get well, then give it a shot. Great team you've got, and hope you get better quickly.

Responded Mar 28, 2009 04:31PM

Cheers Glenn, got back in the pool a couple of weeks ago and (after 7+ weeks out and doing nothing) felt awful (but in a "good" way). Just need to get fitter and swim smarter again. As for the team - they truly humbled me! I am not sure I know of another sport/social setting where people are so considerate.

It'll be a pleasure just fighting to get the thing on. And yes I'll be quick (in my mind's eye anyway!!)

I bought a FS pro on ebay last month for half the price, so no new suits for me in the short run. The suits helps, but they will never swim for you. If you don't try hard, you wont win just because of an expensive suit. Yes they help you, and I mean physically. But they also give you a psychological edge. In the end, how many seconds did the suit help you shave of your personal best or victories over a usual competitor because of the material, compression, streamlining shape or because of the mental edge it gave you may be hard to determine.

This is a little off-topic, but in the German speaking world there was a great debate surrounding the speedo LZR with regard to position in the water. Does it actually give the swimmer a greater buoyancy?
My personal view, coming from a skiing nation, is that every sport relies on good quality equipment for long-term interest. Records fell in Beijing, but there was so spate of surprise wins by outsiders - the best swimmers got the medals, they just got them faster than the rest of history.

Thanks Kimberly. It equates to the sleek helmuts worn by the downhill skiers of today in comparison to the helmuts of the 80's. While the argument in our sport comes down to "not everyone has access" to the tech suits, from a skiing perspective, can you tell us if everyone, has access to all the latest technology in skiing?
