Swimming Set of the Week - May 8, 2009

Pull/swim set this week.  It's up to you to get the most out of the set by being true to the descends.  For an extra challenge, extend your breathing pattern whenever you're pulling.

 2 X 400 (1 pull/1 swim)

4 X 200 (alternate 1 pull/1 swim, descend time on each track)

6 X 100 (alternate 1 pull/1 swim, descend time on each track)

8 X 50 (alternate 2 pull/2 swim, descend time on each track)

10 X 25 (alternate 2 swim, breathing as much as you want/2 pull no breath)

Looks like a 'nasty' set, Barbara. Do you use paddles and pull buoy on the pull? Or really work the abs without? We tend to pull with out pull buoy to get the abs to work but then they cheat by putting in those odd few kicks so we have to isolate the legs with bands too

what do u mean by 1 pull 1 swim ..is it 400 pull and 400 swim or one stroke each?

well i tried this workout on saturday ...donno if i made the right choice by having 1 minutes rest between each swim...is it much for an 11 years old boy ?

I will try to interpret this set, Juan. I think you do 2 x 400: the first 400 you pull the entire 400, the second 400 you swim the entire 400.

Then you do 4 x 200, where you alternate again, pulling the odds (1 and 3), swimming the evens (2 and 4), and at the same time, you descend your pulling 200s, and descend your swimming 200s, so the first pull is slower than the second, and the first swim is slower than the second.

This is the theme. Does this make sense? So for the 8 x 50, you do 2 x 50 pulling, then 2 x 50 swimming, and for all the pulls you make them faster and faster, and for all the swims you make them faster and faster.

I think that's what Barbara means by "track." One track is pulling, the other is swimming.

And for the 10 x 25, you swim 2 x 25 swimming and breathing as much as you want, then 2 x 25 pulling and not breathing at all.

Also I think she adds that for an extra challenge whenever you are doing a pull "track" you can "extend" your breathing, that is breathe every 5 or 7 or 9 or whatever instead of every 3.

Could be wrong. This looks like a challenging set!
